Safety & Operation

All lawn mowers should be treated with respect. They are powerful machines and in the wrong hands can do a lot of damage. Start by reading the manual and following all of the safety guidelines outlined in the manual. Never work on the lawn mower without first ensuring that the engine is turned off.

While cutting the lawn and using the side discharge, never allow anyone to stand beside the discharge or point the discharge at something that could be damaged by high speed flying objects  ejected from the lawn mower.

Always check the engine to make sure that there is sufficient oil in the engine before starting each day. Top up if necessary.  Fill the fuel tank while the engine is cool. A good time to do this is before you start cutting the lawn. Fuel spills can sometimes cause fires. If you do spill any fuel, wait until it evaporates prior to starting the engine to avoid any chance of fire. Always fill the fuel tank outdoors.

Shut the engine off before removing the rear bag to empty it of grass or making any other kind of adjustments to the lawn mower.

Maintenance:

Maintenance of the lawn mower  is pretty straight forward. Read the guidelines in the manual and follow them.  Arrange to have your engine tuned up once a year and the oil changed at the same time. This applies to most consumer applications where you are cutting your lawn once a week. If you are using the lawn mower for commercial applications you may need to change the oil more often.

Keep the housing free of debris to avoid the acid from the grass causing the housing to deteriorate. Also keep grass from building up around the muffler to avoid the possibility of fire. Check the spark plug to ensure that it is not corroded and dirty. Replace if it is pitted. Always use clean fresh gasoline for your lawn mower. Following these tips and others in the manual will ensure that your lawn mower will last for many years.

Starting a Lawn Mower

November 23rd, 2010 ernie Posted in General | 1 Comment »

Starting a Lawn MowerThis is all about starting a lawn mower,  a push lawn mower that runs on gasoline. Obviously, how to start your individual lawn mower will vary according to the brand and model. Some lawn mowers have a choke that you need to engage, while others need to be primed. On the more expensive models, there will be a key or button to turn or press to start the lawn mower.

Consult your instruction book for details about your lawn mower. Always follow all proper safety precautions before starting your lawn mower. They can be found in your lawnmower’s manual. Reading your manual is the first thing you should do when you purchase a new lawn mower. It could save you a lot of trouble and make it more safe for you when using your lawn mower if you practice some of the safety recommendations.

Safety Considerations when Starting a Lawn Mower

Engine Oil –  Make sure you have enough engine oil in your mower. Usually there is a cap on top of the mower body, smaller than the gas cap, that says “oil” or something similar. The cap will probably have an oil gauge attached, so check the oil as you would in a car, that is, judge the level of oil on the gauge against the depth of the reservoir (the length of the gauge). Compare the level of oil to the marks on the dip stick. Always perform this check at the beginning of each day that you use the lawn mower.

Gasoline –  Make sure you have enough gasoline. There should be a clearly labeled cap on the gas tank. If you open it, you should be able to look down into the tank and see the approximate level. Add more (preferably using a funnel) if needed. If you spill some of the fuel, wait until it has evaporated before you start the lawn mower. never fill the gas tank while the engine is running and wait till it cools before filling the tank to avoid the potential of a fire.

Prime the Engine –  Locate the prime button, usually red or black, a squishy button somewhere on the mower’s body. Push it between 3 and 4 times in order to force the gasoline into the lines. Some models will have a choke, which you need to open and then close once the engine is running. Some of the newer models now have automatic primers and chokes, so you may be able to skip this step.

Safety Lever

You may need to pull and hold a starting lever (a safety feature). Or the lawnmower will not start no matter what you do. All modern lawn mowers now come with this feature.

Position – Brace your arm holding the starting lever, and pull upward on the pull chord, which you should find on top of the mower body. You may have to do this several times before the motor starts up.

Will Not Start –  If you are still unable to get your mower started, try the lawnmower inspection and troubleshooting steps at How to Repair a Lawnmower.

Make sure that there is gasoline in the gas tank and have not flooded the engine. Wait for about five minutes before trying to start it again. While you are waiting visually make sure that the spark plug wire is attached to the spark plug. Also that the safety start is engaged. If it still fails to start, you may have to take to a lawn repair service to have the engine serviced. We suggest that you do this early in the season. Otherwise you may have to wait in line at the repair shop to have your lawn mower tuned up or repaired.

MTD Gold Push Mower 109Q

November 21st, 2010 ernie Posted in 20 Inch Cut, MTD, Push Mower | 2 Comments »

The MTD Gold Push Mower 109Q is a great little lawn mower for urban consumers who need a small lawn mower, that is gas-powered and can be stored easily. You probably do not want to cut a large lawn with this 20-inch lawn mower, however, for MTD Gold Push Mower 109Qsmall lawns it is ideal. With a low emission engine certified engine, a 20-inch dome mulching deck, and a 9-position wheel height adjustment for each wheel it will more than meet your needs.

There is a side grass bag that can also be purchased as an accessory if you really need to catch the grass clippings, however, after using a mulching lawn mower myself, I would never use a grass catcher again unless for some reason I let the grass get too long. Mulching lawn mowers are great especially when you cut the grass often and do not let it too long. Sometimes I will also use the grass catcher to collect leaves as long as there are not too many.

This is a great little push lawn mower that will last many years for the average urban homeowner assuming you follow the standard maintenance recommended for this lawn mower.

The MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower model 549Q is sold by many dealers across Canada and the US and is one of a line of product brands that MTD sells. The MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower model 549Q has a Honda 160cc overhead cam, 4 cycle engine, no mixing of gas and oil, emission certified low noise engine.

MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower - 549Q
The Push Mower model 549Q is a rear bag discharge grass collector style of a lawnmower. Conversion to mulching can be completed almost instantly without tools.

Rear bagging of grass cuttings is far superior to side bagging. The lawnmower has better balance and it is much easier to navigate around shrubs and trees.  In addition, the larger wheels at the back provide additional strength to support a heavy bag of grass cuttings. As a result, they are also more maneuverable with a grass catcher around shrubs and other tight spaces.

Each wheel can be individually adjusted to the desired height for perfect grass cutting. The MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower model 549Q comes partially assembled with consumers completing assembly in a matter of minutes. Make sure you add the oil to the engine prior to starting for the first time.

Accessories

The rear discharge kit was the only accessory mentioned.

Price & Delivery

The MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower model 549Q can be purchased at a number of dealers around the country. We did not see a price on the company’s website for this push lawnmower.

Maintenance

Consumers who take good care of the MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower model 549Q will have a lawnmower that lasts for many years. Subsequently, after every grass cutting, clean off the deck of the lawnmower. This prevents the buildup of wet grass that is acidic. It can over time eat away at the deck of the lawnmower. The build-up of grass near the exhaust can also ignite a fire or at least cause a lot of smoke to be generated. If you do not think this can happen, the writer can attest that it actually happened on his lawnmower.

Also, before starting the MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower model 549Q each time, check it over to confirm there are no loose parts. Also that there is sufficient oil in the engine and sufficient gasoline in the tank to cut your lawn. As a general rule, you should not fill a gasoline tank while the engine is hot.

Change the oil based on the recommendations of the manufacturer, however, it should be changed at least once per season as a minimum and more often if you are a heavy user and have a lot of lawn to cut.

Gold High Wheel Push Mower – Safety & Operation

A few comments about the safety and operation of the MTD Gold High Wheel Push Mower model 549Q are needed. Whenever you are working on the lawnmower always shut the engine off. Never try to clear grass from the housing while the engine is running. The same goes for oil changes and changing the grass catcher. But many people will circumvent what is known as the dead man’s switch i.e. when you release the bar, the engine stops. However, some people will wire these closed so that the engine remains running even if your hands are not on the push handle. As a result, we strongly recommend against this approach. Never allow the engine to run while you are doing anything other than cutting grass.

Sometimes sharp objects could exit out of the opening at the back while the grass catcher bag is removed or out of the side discharge if you are using that option. Sharp objects can damage and hurt anything in their way.  Just turn off the machine before doing any maintenance.

Spilled fuel can sometimes cause fires. If you do spill any fuel, wait until it evaporates prior to starting the engine to avoid any chance of fire. Always fill the fuel tank outdoors.

Shut the engine off before removing the rear bag to empty it of grass or make any other kind of adjustments to the lawn mower.

Also, keep grass from building up around the muffler to avoid the possibility of fire. Check the spark plug to ensure that it is not corroded and dirty. Replace if it is pitted. Always use clean fresh gasoline for your lawn mower. Following these tips and others in the manual will ensure that your lawn mower will last for many years.

John Deere Lawn Mowers

September 14th, 2010 ernie Posted in John Deere | 2 Comments »

John Deere Lawn MowersJohn Deere lawn mowers are well-known for construction equipment, farming equipment as well as forestry and residential products. They provide parts and repairs across North America and there is usually a John Deere dealer not far from many businesses and homes across the country. In addition many 3rd party dealers also carry John Deere residential products for sale to urban customers. These include lawn mowers, garden tractors and much more from places like Lowes and other major stores. They are a very popular line of equipment and many consumers as well as businesses use their products!

John Deere provides a full product line of equipment including lawn mowers, riding mowers, attachments, utility tractors, zero turn mowers, utility vehicles, walk behind mowers, self propelled mowers, trimmers, blowers, saws as well as home work shop equipment. Just about everything you need for maintaining your landscaping can be found in John Deere’s product line of lawn equipment.

John Deere Lawn Mowers – Support & Recalls

John Deere lawn mowers are well supported with excellent parts availability across the country as well. You can check their website for their products, sales events and even specials that they have available from time to time. Their site will also assist you in finding the right product for your landscaping requirements.

Safety recalls for their products, including John Deere lawn mowers can also be found on the John Deere web site as well. Don’t forget to read about some of the safety considerations that everyone should be aware of when operating lawn equipment regardless of whether it is a John Deere lawn mower or someone else’s lawn mower.

We also are reviewing a number of John Deere lawn mowers on this site. For example the John Deere JS46 lawn mower was recently reviewed on our blog as was the John Deere JS36. This entire blog is aimed at providing information about lawn mowers and lawn management to our readers so that we can all enjoy a beautiful lawn and be the envy of the neighbors.

Four Step Process

A quick comment about looking after your lawn. There is a four step process to ensuring your lawn looks great all year round. Here are the steps that everyone can easily follow:

  • Fertilize 4 times a year
  • Mow your lawn whenever it has grown a half inch to one inch
  • Keep your lawn clear of weeds and other debris such as leaves
  • Water your lawn with one inch of water once a week

The above may need to be varied depending on the climate you live in. For example anyone living in the desert who wants a green lawn is going to have to water their lawn every day. In particularly dry climates even twice a day to avoid the lawn becoming dried out. The hot sun will burn the lawn within a couple of hours if the earth is not kept moist with  lots of water to feed the roots. In addition specific grasses can only be grown in hot climates vs. climates that are cooler and receive more rain. Talk to your lawn care specialist from your lawn care company. They can provide local information about the proper grass seed and the fertilizer. Apply lots of water to ensure you have a healthy looking lawn all year around.

Any comments are also welcome on our blog as long as readers will find them informative and helpful. On specific lawn mowers we have seen very positive comments as well as negative comments about certain types of lawn mowers. Many people do not take the proper care of their lawn mowers and run into problems as a result. Spam comments will be deleted.

Yard Machines 139 CC 22inch Self Propelled

September 7th, 2010 ernie Posted in 22 Inch Cut, Front Self Powered, Yard Machines | 5 Comments »

I just followed my own advice from the last post and managed to purchase a new lawnmower at a considerable discount at Lowes. Unfortunately, there are no more Yard Machines 139 CC  22inch Self Propelled left at the store I went to but you never know if there will be others. There were about 5 lawnmowers left when i bought mine.

The curious thing is that I cannot find it on any website, even the manufacturers. It is very similar to the Model 44M9 on the Yard Machines website, however, it differs in three major areas. Yard Machines 139 CC 22inch Self PropelledFirst, it is a 22-inch wide lawnmower and secondly, it does not have a rear bag attachment for catching the grass. You can either use this lawnmower as a mulcher or a side discharge, which is fine with me.

The last major difference that we could see is that it has an old fashion choke instead of an auto choke. The picture on the left is exactly the same as mine, without the grass catcher on the back.  It works fine, you just have to remember to open the choke when you start it cold and close the choke once it is running. The choke is located on the push bar handle within easy reach.

This is a really great lawnmower. I have cut the lawn several times and really enjoy the self-propelled feature and also not having to bag the grass! Here are the specs for the machine we purchased.

Yard Machines 139 CC 22inch Self Propelled – Specifications:

  • 139cc MTD PowerMore™ OHV engine
  • AutoChoke – no priming. Just pull and start.
  • Overhead valve engines run more efficiently and produce fewer emissions than the standard L-Head engines.
  • 22″ deck
  • 9 position individual wheel height adjustment
  • 8″ wheels

Engine: The engine is a 139cc MTD PowerMore™ OHV engine

Propulsion: This is a Front-wheel drive self-propelled machine

Warranty: This lawn mower comes with a 2-year limited warranty.

Features:

  • 22″ deck
  • Front-wheel drive self-propelled
  • Mulch or side discharge
  • Durable automotive style powder coated paint
  • Bottle of oil included

Description of the Yardman 139 CC 22inch self Propelled Lawn Mower

We are very satisfied with this lawnmower. It starts the first time every time. It is easy to steer and control with the self-propelled feature and it mulches the grass very well. I usually keep the self-propelled feature engaged and just lift the front wheels a bit if I need to slow down or turn a corner. This lawnmower is 22 inches wide, which is 2 inches wider than my old lawn mower and I do not have to bag the grass either. I save a lot of time as a result and I am saving on the cost of paper bags which we fill each week and put out to the curb. Saves me money and saves the city the cost of having to pick up my grass clippings!

All I had to do was add the oil to the engine from the bottle of oil that was included with the lawnmower, fill the gas tank with regular gasoline and start it. I have checked the oil level a few times since and it is still at the right level and clear as to when I first put it in.

Delivery: Most lawn mowers can be picked up in the store, however, if you do not have the means to take it home yourself, delivery usually can be arranged for a delivery charge. You may want to consider borrowing a trailer or a van to bring home your lawn mower and avoid the delivery charge.

I was able to just get the box into my trunk with the trunk lid left open. Fortunately, I did not have too far to go to get home.

Safety & Operation

All lawn mowers should be treated with respect. They are powerful machines and in the wrong hands can do a lot of damage. Start by reading the manual and following all of the safety guidelines outlined in the manual. Never work on the lawnmower without first ensuring that the engine is turned off.

While cutting the lawn and using the side discharge, never allow anyone to stand beside the discharge or point the discharge at something that could be damaged by high-speed flying objects ejected from the lawnmower.

Always check the engine to make sure that there is sufficient oil in the engine before starting each day. Top up if necessary.  Fill the fuel tank while the engine is cool. A good time to do this is before you start cutting the lawn. Spilled fuel can sometimes cause fires. If you do spill any fuel, wait until it evaporates prior to starting the engine to avoid any chance of fire. Always fill the fuel tank outdoors.

Shut the engine off before removing the rear bag to empty it of grass or making any other kind of adjustments to the lawnmower.

Yard Machines 139 CC Maintenance:

The maintenance of the lawnmower is pretty straightforward. Read the guidelines in the manual and follow them.  Arrange to have your engine tuned up once a year and the oil changed at the same time. This applies to most consumer applications where you are cutting your lawn once a week. If you are using the lawnmower for commercial applications you may need to change the oil more often.

Keep the housing free of debris to avoid the acid from the grass causing the housing to deteriorate. Also, keep grass from building up around the muffler to avoid the possibility of fire. Check the spark plug to ensure that it is not corroded and dirty. Replace if it is pitted. Always use clean fresh gasoline for your lawnmower. Following these tips and others in the manual will ensure that your lawnmower will last for many years.

Best Time to Buy a Lawnmower

August 21st, 2010 ernie Posted in Buying a Lawn Mower | 3 Comments »

Best Time to Buy a Lawn MowerLate summer is the Best Time to Buy a Lawnmower from any of the major stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, Canadian Tire, Sears, and many more. There is not a single store owner who wants to get stuck carrying old inventory over to another season. If they have not sold all of their product by now, they are ready to place major sales on lawnmowers and in fact all lawn products. If you have been holding off, now is the time to make a purchase! Watch for sales in the newspaper, flyers that come around to your door. Also just go into the store and talk with a salesperson to learn when sales will be starting.

Replacing my Old Lawnmower

My 32-year-old Craftsman lawnmower just quit. Now I really like to fix things. However this time it was beyond what I could do myself. So I had to bite the bullet as they say and purchase a new lawnmower. Before I talk about my new lawnmower and the great deal I got, I just want to mention that my old one was in great shape. The housing was solid as were the wheels. I think the engine was as well. However, it really needed a tune-up and that meant taking it to a mechanic. It might have cost me $50 to get it fixed. But would you spend $50 on a lawnmower that is 32 years old? It did not owe me a thing. I was very happy with it while it worked, but it was time to change.

Best Time to Buy a Lawnmower on Sale

On top of all of that, I only had to pay $216 for a 22-inch Yardman lawnmower. It also has 2-n-1 features, self propelled 139 cc mulching lawnmower. That was more than $80 off the price they were charging a week earlier. The prices are coming down! Now I might have done a bit better had I waited until the end of August. However, the selection might be more limited.  I might not have been able to find a lawnmower at all. So now is the time to buy when the sales are on. As a result, there is still some selection to choose from!

The Yardman model we purchased is a 2-N-1 self-propelled mower with a Powermore OHV engine, front-wheel drive ( which by the way is much easier to maneuver than a rear-wheel drive, in the writer’s opinion), with either side discharge or mulching configuration. It does not have a grass catcher, but that is ok because I am more than happy to not have to fill grass bags and put them out to the garbage every week!

There is a choke on this engine so you do not have to prime it to start it, but you do have to set the choke when the engine is cool.  The wheels are all the same being 8-inch in diameter. The wheels can also be adjusted to select one of 6 positions in height. It comes with a 2-year limited warranty and because I used my credit card, I will get another year added on. I was offered a one-year extension of the warranty for a small fee, however, I get free extensions on my credit card so did not take this insurance.

Does Anyone have One of these Machines?

I am really looking forward to trying out this lawnmower and will provide an update on how I like or dislike the machine in my next post. If anyone has one of these machines, I would appreciate your comments, positive or negative.

So far I am really satisfied with this lawnmower. I have discovered that it is not as well built as my craftsman lawn mower and will probably not last as long as it did, however for the price I paid for the lawnmower it is ok.  I am really happy about not having to bag the grass any longer and since I take good care of my lawnmowers, chances are it will last a long time.

Riding Lawnmowers

August 7th, 2010 ernie Posted in General | 3 Comments »

Riding Lawn MowersMany people love the idea of being able to ride on their riding lawnmowers while cutting the lawn, while others prefer to get the exercise of walking behind a lawnmower that is self propelled. If you are really looking for exercise, then a pure push-type lawn mower is probably the way to go. Not only do you walk behind the lawnmower you expend extra energy as you push the lawnmower as well. Still, it can get quite tedious pushing a heavy lawnmower. Especially when you have a large lawn to cut every week!

So what type should you purchase? What criteria should you use to help you narrow down your decision? We are going to focus on the type of lawnmower in this post and stay away from manufacturers or various models. Basically, we will compare the push type of lawnmower, the self-propelled lawnmower, and the riding lawnmower.

Our criteria are the cost to purchase, functionality, area to cut, and overall ease of use. You may have others and we would be glad to hear about them, so please leave a comment or suggestion.

Riding Lawnmowers – Cost

The cost of a lawnmower varies a lot and as you add features the cost goes up. A basic lawnmower without a grass catcher or mulching capability can cost as low as $150 on sale. This is a push-type lawnmower with no features. It has a good engine and will cut your lawn for many years, however, you will need to push this lawnmower in all conditions and if the grass is long you may have to rake up the grass. You can spend a little more money can get something with a grass catcher.

Self Propelled

The next major level up is a self-propelled lawnmower and of course, these are more expensive, have more moving parts, and have more things to go wrong over time driving up repairs. They are easy to drive, you just follow and steer the lawnmower in the direction you want to go. I prefer the front-wheel-drive model since all you need to do to slow your progress is to lift the front wheels a little bit to disengage them from the ground. The rear-wheel-drive lawnmowers work equally well, however, I find these less easy to maneuver. It is not uncommon to spend $400 to $600 on these types of lawnmowers.

The next level is riding lawnmowers. There are various types of mowers such as zero-turn mowers, and short radius mowers, tractors with mower attachments which can be used for various other activities around the yard. Of course, the sky is the limit in terms of size, power, and attachments, so the price is as well. You really need to decide what you will use the riding lawn mower for, how much you will use it and whether it is worth it to you to spend up words of $1500 and much more on one of these machines.

Riding Lawnmowers – Functionality

We have mentioned push, self-propelled, and riding lawnmowers. What other things do you want the mower to do for you? Mulching, grass-catching, de-thatching, rototilling, pick up leaves, pull trailers, push snow, or blow snow. These basic questions and the answers to them will take you in one direction or another in terms of the kind of machine to purchase.

The more you want to do with these machines, the higher the cost and the more functionality that is required. Examine this area carefully. Sometimes it is better to buy one machine that will blow snow and cut the lawn with various attachments. Long driveways with large yards in areas where you get hot summers and cold snowy winters might push you in the direction of a riding lawn mower with a snowblower attachment. On the other hand, small yards with lots of obstacles and little snow in the wintertime pretty well eliminates any kind of riding lawnmower.

Riding Lawn Mowers – Area to Cut

Riding lawn mowers are naturally bigger, cut larger areas easily, and provide comfort for the driver. They do not work as well in areas where there are lots of shrubs to maneuver around, steep grades, and tight corners. If you have any of these conditions, give some careful thought to what you want to purchase and how you will be able to use it. You do not want to end up having to do a lot of extra trimming because you cannot get into tight areas or around shrubs and trees. Riding lawn mowers are best at wide open large areas that need grass cutting.

Overall Ease of Use

Any of these machines are great to use when they are working fine. The problem is that the more working parts there are the more that can go wrong. Which will drive your overall cost up especially if you need to hire a mechanic to fix the machine.

Push lawn mowers just need gas, oil, and starting by pulling a chord to get you going. While the other extreme is the riding lawnmower. Which has a starter, a generator, more belts, and possibly a transmission and driveshaft. Also inflated tires, larger engine, and several cutting blades. When they work they work great. However, like any machine, they need regular maintenance. Because they are more complex, your ease of use will be in question if you do have problems.

Riding lawn mowers are great, we just want you to realize that these machines are more powerful and will need more care and maintenance than a simple push lawnmower.

Feel free to leave comments on our criteria or add some of your own. Spam will be deleted so don’t waste your time and ours. For more details in general about lawn mowers, click here.

Self-Propelled Lawnmower

July 21st, 2010 ernie Posted in Buying a Lawn Mower | 1 Comment »

Self Propelled Lawn MowersMy lawnmower recently broke down and I guess I will have to fix it. It is an old model, in fact, it is over 30 years old but still worked fine up until today. Anyway, I borrowed my neighbor’s new lawnmower which just happens to be a self-propelled lawnmower model. This is the first time I have used a self-propelled lawnmower. I thought I would write about it. Turns out that I really liked using his lawnmower. Now I want one of my own that is self-propelled.

Self-Propelled Lawnmowers – Borrow a Lawn Mower

It is not always a good idea to borrow other people’s tools. If you break them you have to replace them with a brand new model. Even if they lend you something that is close to the end of its life.  This was not my situation, I just do not like to borrow other people’s tools.

Anyway, his lawnmower was a self-propelled mower and I found that I quite liked it. There are rear self-propelled models and front propelled models. This was a front self-propelled model so I really cannot compare it to these other models. There are two levers on the handle. One is the normal safety lever which causes the engine to stop if you let it go. The other lever engages the power wheels to drive the lawnmower.

Self Propelled Lawnmowers – How to Use

I found that you could really not push the lawnmower easily. Sometimes you want to go slowly especially if the grass is thick. Or if you are navigating around a plant for example. You can push the lawnmower, it is just a little more difficult than a normal non-self-propelled lawnmower. I guess the wheels or the transmission provides some resistance.

Along with a straight cut, using the self-propelled feature is easy and very helpful. Basically, all you need to do is steer the lawnmower and it moves along at a reasonable speed for walking. If you need to go more slowly or want to turn, just lean on the handle to raise the front wheels slightly and your forward momentum decreases or stops altogether. The wheels continue to turn, however, they are not touching the ground and will not pull the mower forward as long as they are raised.

I was also cutting the grass when it was wet from heavy morning dew. I know I really should not have been cutting it at this time. Most people wait until the grass has dried. However, we had a party later in the day. I really needed to have the lawn cut and looking good. This lawnmower really got a workout with the wet grass and also my lawn had not been cut in a while.

I had to make frequent stops to clear the grass chute. Wet grass does not blow very far and so it would stop at the entrance to the bag. As a result, I could only go about 50 feet before the grass would plug the entrance to the bag and I would have to stop and clear the bag.

Self-propelled lawnmower

Aside from the issues I have mentioned, I was very satisfied with my neighbor’s lawnmower and would probably purchase a self-propelled lawnmower if  I cannot fix my own. With a large lawn and being able to just follow along, steering the lawnmower, you really cannot get any better than that unless you are sitting on a riding lawnmower.

My own lawn mower is not running well due to what I think is old gas that has clogged my gas tank and/or my carburetor on the lawnmower. I really cannot complain since I have not tuned this thing up for over 20 years. Nor have I replaced the spark plug, nor have I cleaned the carburetor. I guess it is about time I did these things and will have to fix it within the next week or buy a new one.

I will keep you posted on my attempts to fix my lawnmower and if you have any comments about self-propelled lawn mowers or fixing lawn mowers feel free to leave comments on my blog. For more information about buying a new lawnmower, click here.

Perfect Lawns and Lawn Maintenance

Perfect Lawns and Lawn MaintenanceEver wondered what it takes to have the perfect lawn? One of your neighbors probably has a lawn that is close. Do you wonder what is he doing that your not? Well, it turns out it is actually pretty easy to get a near-perfect lawn. Which will be the envy of your neighbors and friends. It really will not take that much work. Perfect lawns and lawn maintenance are easy to achieve. It just takes a little time and tender loving care.

Perfect Lawns and Lawn Maintenance

The secret to the perfect lawn is regular care, regular watering when needed, regular fertilizer, cutting when the lawn has grown an inch or more and before it gets too long and keeping debris and weeds away from your lawn. We will cover these issues in detail, however, if you pay attention to these basics, your lawn will look great! All of these items are required, however, if you keep up with the work, you will not get overwhelmed and the lawn will look great. If you let it go for a few weeks, you may have a big job on your hands and that is no fun.

Fertilizer

Lawns need fertilizer at regular intervals. Even if you use a standard fertilizer without chemicals for killing weeds you will be away ahead in terms of a healthy lawn. The fertilizer companies offer specific fertilizers for the spring, the summer, and the late fall. We recommend that you use these fertilizers and put them on your lawn following the instructions that come with the fertilizer. You will have a nice green healthy lawn that will be better able to withstand dry spells and also fight off weeds.

Some fertilizers call for lots of water afterward while others require a dry spell. Either way, follow the instructions to avoid burning your lawn. Also, use a proper spreader and avoid spilling fertilizer on your lawn in concentrated amounts.

Weeds & Debris

Another trick to a healthy lawn is to keep the lawn clear of debris such as leaves, branches, and other material that might impede the growth of your lawn. Weeds seem to grow everywhere and are able to survive in the driest conditions. Many municipalities are cutting back on pesticides and limiting what you can purchase at stores to kill the weeds in your lawn.

For many people, this is a good thing, especially if you are concerned about getting sick from these chemicals. For the last two years, I have just carried a small blade with me to dig out dandelion roots and other weeds. So far I am ahead of the game. NO weeds, no chemicals, and less cost! I just dig them out as I see them while I am cutting the grass. It takes a little longer to mow the grass, but that is ok with me.

Water

Water is important for lawns, both too much and too little. Too much rain and you get mold, mushrooms, and rot in your lawn. Not enough and it gets dry, dead-looking, and very thin. These are excellent conditions for weeds to take over since they seem to thrive in all conditions. If your lawn is looking dry give it a good watering so that the roots get a chance to replenish the roots and the blades above ground. Let the grass grow a bit longer before cutting it to provide more protection and guard against evaporation. If water is inexpensive and not limited by the city, water every day in the evening. This ensures less evaporation and more water for the grass.

A strong root system, deep in the soil, and a thick mat will ensure that your lawn can withstand dry spells longer. When it is growing quickly, cut it often, when it is growing slowly cut it less often and allow it to grow a bit longer than you normally wood.

Cutting Your Lawn

We talked a little bit about cutting your lawn earlier in this post.  Never allow your lawn to get too long without cutting it. It is hard on the grass, hard on your lawnmower, and more work for you if you have to cut grass that has grown too long. Cut it more often so the lawn can easily recover unless you are going through a real dry spell and you do not want to water your lawn.

Make sure your mower blade is sharp and not tearing the lawn. This makes for a nice even looking cut and a more tailored look.

Mulching, bagging, or leaving the Grass Clippings

There are many opinions about whether you should mulch, bag or allow your grass clippings to mix in with the grass. Bagging your grass is the most work and your city needs to collect the grass weekly or you need someplace to dispose of it.

Mulching your grass as you cut it means you are leaving the grass on the lawn in very small particles. It will disintegrate quickly allowing the nutrients to go back into the lawn. The mulch also insulates the lawn and provides protection from evaporation as well as makes it more difficult for weeds to grow. The only drawback of mulching is really that you should cut the lawn more often than normal since a long grass lawn is very difficult to cut while mulching. Your lawnmower can do a really good job and you will also not have obvious lawn clippings on your lawn.

The same goes for just leaving the grass clippings on the lawn, Cut it often to avoid having to rake the lawn. Sometimes when cutting a lawn that has been allowed to grow too long, the grass will coat the lawn and block the lawn from getting any light. Cut often and you will have a great lawn minus the weeds.

Perfect Lawns and Lawn Maintenance

In summary, cut often unless it is dry, do not cut it too short, fertilize 4 times a year following the proper instructions, keep the weeds down even if you have to dig them out yourself, keep the lawn clear of debris such as leaves and water often enough depending on local conditions to maintain a healthy lawn. Please feel free to leave your tips regarding keeping a healthy lawn!
