Self propelled rotary lawn mowers need the operator to wring a bar which helps the mower to take off but, at one fell swoop we should take control over the direction it moves. If you move your grip off the bar, the blade stops spinning. The drive doesn't shut off even when you release the bar and thus facilitating your move from one place to another without slashing the grass.
